Hair of the Dog to Paint the Town Red The Curious Origins of Everyday Sayings and Fun Phrases By Andrew Thompson

The book, Hair of the Dog to Paint the own Red by Andrew Thompson is very much a reliable reference book when you are confused about phrases that you never heard of or maybe just curious to learn what they stand for. The phrases inside are some I've heard of so many times, others are new to me but they all have information on what they stand for and mean. You will have over 400 phrases covered in this book, some you've read or heard said to you by anyone. I know that most of them I have heard once in my lifetime so far and probably could use a few now knowing what they mean.

A few of these are ones such as Son of a Gun, The Whole Nine Yards, and even like the one Ham It Up. The first one mentioned Son of a Gun is actually about children being born a designated area behind the ship's gun and sometimes from unknown paternity. So they would be listed on the ship's log as a son of a gun. The Whole Nine Yards refers to WWII, American fighter planes and the gun's ammunition linked to nine yards long belts.  Lastly, Ham It Up came from the theaters in the 1800s, where they showed some very low paid shows that used ham fat to remove makeup afterward, and from this, any bad acting became known as Hamming it up.

I honestly feel this book is quite a fun and interesting read and reference to some unique phrases. It's different than many other books but really relates to the real world and those odd phrases we hear or say ourselves. I can say that having never understood what a few phrases were and now reading up on them inside this book is very helpful! Next time I'll be prepared to respond with confidence and understanding to the phrase told to me, instead of nodding and smiling politely. I think anyone who really loves to use phrases, wants to understand phrases told to them, or any other purpose, this is a great book to own! It's just packed and organized in separate chapters, which relate to those phrases. Finally, this is a wonderful book and a great reference guide to own! I love the phrases inside and excellent detailed information about each.
